I finally got around to trying Joeys, the slick wine bar at Burrard and Pender. I was surprised at the cosmopolitan interior, which seems to bring Vancouver up a (much needed) step to something approximating a big city vibe. I even like the massive lamp that looms like a gargantuan portabello mushroom. The Joey’s chain has its roots in the earls/cactus club concept, but with this location they have upgraded the whole concept. True to form, I was greeted by no fewer than 5 spellbindingly attractive hostesses and I won’t lie and say this offended me (at all). The wine list was playful and long but what really stood out for me was the menu. They claim to serve casual fine dining and I cant argue. The menu is fun and thoughtful, and has items like grilled cheese with lobster and an ahi tuna club sandwich. ($14.99) I hesitantly tried the Butter Chicken, ($16.49) which was much better than is to be expected outside an Indian restaurant and the Panang Curry ($16.49) was also extremely appealing. Somehow they are doing fresh fusion cuisine affordably and well. I am sure this place gets absolutely packed on Fridays and weekends, but I think its hard to do better for a casual place to meet after work for some fresh food and good drinks in the downtown area.
