After being acquired earlier this year, Urbanspoon is now trying their hand at online dinner reservations, with a trial in Seattle. This puts them in direct competition with Open Table, which had a successful IPO earlier this summer. Both charge $1 per reservation, and Open Table charges $300/month to restaurant owners for their dedicated terminal. What seems clear is that Urbanspoon’s great web app and global user community positions it extremely well to take on the reservation market. I personally would be quite happy to never go back to Open Table if given the choice to stay at Urbanspoon.
