Arriving after midnight in NYC, the famous burger joint in my hotel was closed. But only steps away I found the largest club sandwich I have ever seen. A real-deal deli since 1937, the Carnegie has salami hanging from the ceiling, walls plastered with aging celebrity photos, and is quick to serve up deliciously garlic pickles. The crowd is the everyman New York scene: Japanese tourists, huge rural Americans squirting mayo like a river, theater goers in tuxedos and drunk ruffians. And the piles of food coming out of the kitchen defy all good sense – the reubens and clubs are stacked like a sky scraper. The pies looked the same, and a chocolate shake almost put me into a coma. Hello New York, I hope I live long enough to eat again.

If this didn’t give you a meat hangover I’m not sure what would. I am strangely drawn to this place though

Somehow I always end up at the Carnegie when I visit NYC, and I’m not sure why. Once is fun, twice is an ordeal, and three times is just plain masochism. There’s better food and better surroundings to be had almost anyplace else. I despise the mile-high sandwiches — too hard to eat, and Mtl smoked meat is better IMHO (though love the pickles). I did appreciate the fact that once, at about 6:30 am, while waiting for a bus to take us to La Guardia, we were able to score a strawberry cheesecake from the Carnegie. It was delicious.

I agree! My idea of a perfect club is the classic variety with the crust cut off – bite size triangles. What am i supposed to do with a tower of food? I would definitely not repeat that order but it was a fun and strange experience.
