Located on the 10 hectare UBC Farm, the Garden Market is part of a working project to make the site a self-sustaining, student centered farm enterprise. Every Saturday from June until early October, 9am-1pm, the Market offers produce grown right on the farm, organic eggs and other organic food from local producers. The farm itself is not certified organic, but follows all the guidelines for COABC organic production. And the food tastes every inch local, freshly harvested and synthetic free!

The relaxed atmosphere, highlighted by an up-beat folk/rock band, organic coffee, fresh bannock and strawberry compote, was dragged down by the overly formal, strict organization of a line-up to reach the produce– this is a first come, first serve market. And you better get there early, as the organic eggs were sold out by 9:15!Line-ups aside, the cherries were plentiful, the snow peas sweet and crisp and the organic garlic and herbs enough to keep me coming back.

The Market is just one aspect of this lovely space – providing a community garden; workshops on Cob construction (sustainable buildings of sand, clay and straw); organically-raised chickens; a Maya Demonstration Garden Project; Aboriginal community Kitchen Gardens; Medicinal gardens; beehives; and an agroforestry trail.
